Wave Energy
Our wave energy system makes use of the free, sustainable and endless supply of this energy resource. Wave energy is not subjected to El Niño or La Niño, or drought, or heat waves or floods. Wave flow is endless and constantly varies in intensity yet they it can produce power, using our proven patented technology.
Wave energy is created by the wind as it blows over the ocean surface. It happens all day, every day. It is nature at its natural best! Wave energy is carried within the seawater as it flows towards the coastline. There is very little energy loss from the time the wave is created until it ultimately loses its energy on the beach.
Water is the best carrier of wave-energy and is many times denser than wind. Wave-energy is endlessly moving everywhere on the planet and therefore it makes sense to use it as our primary source of energy generation, as opposed to wind. We harness this endless and inexhaustible form of energy using our "BOD" wave energy technology, to generate electricity. This technology however is best suited to areas where the tidal variance is limited to a mean of approximately 1m. These areas are typically situated between and slightly beyond the Tropics. The east coastline of continents is the best power producer and the west coastline is slightly less so.
In South Africa they are fortunate that we have a western, a southern and an eastern coastline and in our instance, the southern coastline has the greatest power potential, followed by the western and then the eastern coastlines. It is conceivable that a power generation plant can be built along the coastline that is equivalent to and greater than the current Medupi Coal Power station, currently being built in South Africa. In fact the coastline can easily support at least three Medupi power stations, all generating carbon free power.
Our wave energy power stations can produce electricity at a lower cost than any coal and/or nuclear power systems planned for South Africa. The concept is simple, robust, storm proof and inexpensive when compared to other power producing systems. It is capital intensive upfront but has a rapid payback period of less than 10 years, due to the fact that there are no input production costs. This is especially useful in the light of the long expected life period (100 years) of the system. There are no moving parts other than our technology. It is carbon emission free.
Our system works using hydroelectric principles together with our "Gravio" technology listed on this site. The ocean fills a reservoir and the water in the reservoir drains back into the surrounding ocean via our "Gravio" technology, thus generating electricity. This is not a tidal pool.
Our methodology is all patented in South Africa and is in the process of being patented internationally.
